You Will Never Understand is an annual commemoration performance staged as a tour through Berlin’s Tempelhofer Feld.
 

Held on the last Sunday of August, the performance coincides with Miners' Day in Ukraine and the anniversary of the city of Donetsk, which has been occupied by Russia since 2014. It explores the relationship between memory and location, as well as the ways we navigate grief and trauma. How do we remember our loved ones when established practices of commemoration are taken away by occupation? How do migration, culture, and personal experience shape our practices of remembrance? Who gets to remember, and who gets to be remembered?
 

This year, You Will Never Understand is dedicated to the memory of my grandmother.

She was able to predict the weather. She was born in New York. She once made a dress from two metres of staple fabric that she received as a gift from the factory where she worked. She used to tell me that, as a child, I threw a shovel into the river. I don't remember doing that. But last summer, we did a series of interviews. And now, it is a commemoration performance.
 

On 30 August, I invite you to join me for a performative tour through Tempelhofer Feld, where I will guide you through memories of my grandmother and my hometown.
